Grading Policy

The following assessment will be used to determine a students grade for each quarter.  A students final grade is an average of all four quarters as long as they meet the Middle Country School District Attendance Policy.  The quarter and final grade will appear as a numerical grade.

1.     Every student will begin each quarter with 100 points which is broken down into four parts.  Parts 1 and 2 will have point values logged in every Physical Education class.  Parts 3 and 4 will be given a point value for each activity.

Part 1: 60 of the 100 points will come from the following four categories:  (3 points per class, 60 points per quarter)

1. Prepared for Class.

Students need proper physical education attire i.e. sneakers, shorts or sweat-pants and appropriate top to participate in physical activities.  Students are not allowed to wear jewelry during physical education class.  All electronic devices (i-pods, cell phones, laptops, etc.), personal belongings, backpacks and purses must be locked up before coming into the gym class.  Students may not bring food and/or drinks into the gym.

If a student is prepared and participates they maintain 3 points and if they are unprepared 3 points will be deducted.  These point values are assessed every day a student has physical education class.

2.     Participation in Class.

If a student is prepared for class, the 3 points a student received for being prepared can be REDUCED FOR NON-PARTICIPATION.

1.     The first time a teacher has to address NON- PARTICIPATION; the student will lose 1 point.

2.     The second time a teacher has to address NON- PARTICIPATION; the student will lose 2 points.

3.     The third time a teacher has to address NON-PARTICIPATION; the student will lose 3 points.

Not Actively Participating in Class = NAP

NAP- Only 2 per marking period may be made up.  They can only be made up after school in the fitness center and within 2 weeks of receiving the NAP.

3.  Attendance.

If a student is absent from physical education class, they are required to make-up the work by critiquing an article or attending after school fitness center.  If the article or attending fitness center is not completed, the student will lose 3 points for not completing the assignment.  Absence from class includes: Legal absence, illegal absence, band or chorus lessons, field trips and pass room.

Cuts can not be made up. A student will lose 4 points for the class (3 points for non participation and 1 point for not fulfilling personal and social responsibilities).

 4. Late for Class.

A student is expected to be on time for class.  If they are late with a pass and they can not get dressed for class because the locker-room is locked, they need to critique an article for that day.  If the paper work is not completed, a student will lose 3 points for the day for non- participation.  If a student is late without a pass and prepared, they are subject to losing 1 to 3 points depending on how late they are.

Part 2:  20 of the 100 points.  (1 point per class, 20 points for the quarter)

I.  Personal and Social Responsibilities:

The student will demonstrate; cooperation with teachers and fellow students, respect for staff and peers, sportsmanship, and proper usage of Physical Education facilities and equipment.

If a student satisfies their personal and social responsibilities, they will receive 1 point for each physical education class.  Failure to do so will result in a deduction of 1 point for the class.

If a student is on time for class, prepared with proper physical education attire and participates to their fullest and fulfills individual and social responsibilities, they will be credited 4 points per class (3 points for part 1, plus 1 point for Part 2).  If they do this every day for the quarter, they will be credited with 80 points.

 Part 3: 10 of the 100 points.

                    1. A written test for most units.

 Part 4:  10 of the 100 points.
