  • VIRTUAL CAREER AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT (OCC 100)

    The purpose of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to explore a variety of careers by completing interest and value surveys. Competencies needed for success in both the workplace and the home will be stressed. Financial analysts worry that Americans’ spending and savings habits have seriously damaged their financial futures. To ensure our students are financially literate, they will be expected to reconcile checking accounts, understand the pros and cons of credit, complete a tax return and gain knowledge of banking services. A computer simulation will focus on finance and money management. Concepts learned in this class will be reinforced by guest speakers from the business world.

    VIRTUAL CONSUMER SKILLS (OCC 105)
    1/2 Credit - Weight 3 - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Prerequisite: None
    Students will learn about homeowner, automobile, health and life insurance. Consumer rights, investment opportunities and how to plan for retirement is also discussed. These skills will enable students to become self-sufficient and financially independent. Helping students to become knowledgeable consumers will enable them to make the best use of their resources. A computer simulation will focus on finance and money management. Concepts learned in this class will be reinforced by guest speakers from the business world.

    BUSINESS/MARKETING
    Business/Marketing is a broad and diverse discipline that enables students to prepare for entry-level employment and to fulfill business-related and personal responsibilities. The sequences of courses in Business/Marketing Education are designed to ensure the correlation of business and marketing education and to provide a variety of options for students to meet sequence requirements while developing broad-based, transferable skills, and specialized competencies.
    One credit of Virtual Career and Financial Management, Virtual Consumer Skills plus Word Processing core courses are required for the Business/Marketing five (5) credit sequence.


    SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING (OCC 116)

    A unique and innovative course designed for individuals with an interest in the sports industry. Students will be exposed to the selling of sports and the use of sports to sell other products. Instructional areas include: an orientation to the sports industry, market analysis, decision-making, product design and promotion, sponsorship and advertising. Internet activities, guest speakers, and field trips round out the student’s experience.


    SPORTS MANAGEMENT (OCC 117)
    1/2 Credit - Weight 3 - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Prerequisite: None

    Students will be introduced to the business of sports. Topics include: management leadership styles, special events management, facilities management, managing professional sports, sports ethics, Title IX and bias in sports. Students should be able to work in small groups and conduct independent research. Internet activities, guest speakers, and field trips complete the student’s experience.


    FASHION MERCHANDISING (OCC 113)
    1/2 Credit - Weight 3 - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Prerequisite: None

    This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of fashion, fads and trends, how fashions develop and spread, and the role of style and fashion in contemporary society. Students will be able to understand competition, quality, promotional activities, store image, fashion terminology and markdowns. Students will look at the psychology of consumer behavior, how consumers make fashion purchasing decisions, and spending characteristics at different stages of life.

    WEB DESIGN 1 (OCC 120)
    1/2 Credit - Weight 3 - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Prerequisite: None

    In this one semester course, students will become familiar with basic web design programs and scripting languages. This course will focus on HTML, Frontpage and a brief introduction to CSS. Students will learn how to lay out an ethical web site and learn the importance of navigational ease of web sites. Students must have organizational skills, knowledge of the keyboard, and an understanding of the computer. This course can be used for a technology or business concentration.

    WEB ANIMATION (OCC 123)
    1/2 Credit - Weight 3 - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Prerequisite: None

    In this one semester course, students who would like to pursue a career in Internet design will create complex web sites using the software application Dreamweaver. In addition, students will create intricate animations using Flash CS3 and learn advanced HTML techniques, introduction to beginning game design and action script. This course can be used for a technology or business concentration.

    COLLEGE PRINCIPLES OF ADVERTISING (SUNY Farmingdale) (OCC 119)
    1/2 Credit - Weight 4 - Grades: 10, 11, 12 - Prerequisite: None

    This course is designed to introduce students to the important features and characteristics of the advertising business. It is intended to give students an overview of how the advertising industry operates, what advertising people do, and some of the effects of advertising on industry and society. Students will use concepts learned to promote in-school events and extra curricula activities. Approximate cost is $140/3 credits. This course will be offered as a college tie-in course with SUNY Farmingdale. Students may earn three (3) college credits in law by successfully completing this course.

    COMPUTER ACCOUNTING (OCC 110)
    1/2 Credit - Weight 3 - Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Prerequisite: None
    This course will introduce the students to the basic accounting equation. As the course develops, students will analyze transactions into debit and credit parts, journalize transactions, post to a general ledger, prepare business papers using a checking account, reconcile a bank statement, create worksheets, prepare financial statements, record adjusting and closing entries for a business. Students will be introduced to Word and Excel. All notes and financial statements will be done in Word and Excel respectively.


    COLLEGE ACCOUNTING (SUNY Farmingdale) (OCC 106)

    Planning on majoring in accounting or business management in college? Did you know that college business programs require their students to learn the basics of accounting? There is always a need for accountants in the job market. Get your accounting foundation now with this college level accounting course designed for the motivated student. The topics covered are those in a college introductory course. Current computer software applications will be utilized. This course will be offered as a college tie-in course with SUNY Farmingdale. Students can earn six (6) college credits in accounting by successfully completing this course. Approximate cost is $140/3 credits. Students will be introduced to Word and Excel. All notes and financial statements will be done in Word and Excel respectively. This course can be used for math.

    ENTREPRENEURSHIP (OCC 111)

    Students will explore the “ins” and “outs” of promoting and selling goods and services. In addition, students will learn how businesses target customers and develop marketing strategies for their customers. Students will complete case studies and team projects, while learning how to start a business. Students will be provided the opportunity to identify and understand the risks and rewards of business ownership and to further develop communication and presentation skills.

    MICROSOFT OFFICE 1 – PRESENTATION APPLICATIONS (SUNY Farmingdale) (OCC 409)

    Microsoft Office 1 emphasizes the knowledge and skills needed by students preparing for college or those desiring practical keyboarding skills essential in handling everyday personal business communications. Word processing will help students in all academic courses and open the door to basic computer application courses. Challenge games will also be incorporated to help students work on increasing speed and proper keying technique. As a part of this course, students will learn various types of formatting of essential business documents using the latest versions of Microsoft Work, as well as creating presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. Upon successful completion of both Microsoft Office 1 and 2, students will be eligible to receive college credit from SUNY Farmingdale. Students will apply for College credit at the beginning of Microsoft Office 2.

    MICROSOFT OFFICE 2 – DATA APPLICATIONS (SUNY FARMINGDALE) (OCC 410)

    Microsoft Office 2 emphasizes the knowledge and skills needed by students preparing for college or those desiring practical data management in handling everyday personal business. Working with spreadsheets, students will learn to manipulate data and present it in a professional manner using the latest version of Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Access will be used when working with larger sets of data, where students will be able to perform advanced queries, create and run macros, and present data using more advanced options. Upon successful completion of both Microsoft Office 1 and 2, students will be eligible to receive college credit from SUNY Farmingdale. Approximate cost is $140/3 credits.     Students will explore legal issues such as marriage (family law), employment law, real estate (property law), corporate law, and contract law with the use of case studies, and the Internet. This course will be offered as a college tie-in course with SUNY Farmingdale. Students may earn three (3) college credits in law by successfully completing this course.     COLLEGE INTRODUCTION TO WEB DESIGN (SUNY Farmingdale) (OCC 423)
    1 Credit - Weight 4 - Grades: 10, 11, 12 - Prerequisite: Web 1

    This is an introductory web page authoring course in which students will learn how to design a web page using HTML and CSS. In addition to the introductory topics of changing text appearance and layout, advanced topics such as tables, frames, graphics and styles will be covered. The College Web Course provides the fundamental skills in programming design logic and fundamental algorithm techniques. Emphasis will be on problem formulation, analysis and solution design using structured programming concepts. Learned concepts are to be applied to real problems using case studies and research throughout the course to present a variety of problems and enable students to apply systems analysis and design techniques to their solutions. A combination of HTML, CSS and JavaScript are taught. This course will be offered as a college tie-in with SUNY Farmingdale. Students will be able to obtain three (3) college credits upon successful completion of this course. Approximate cost is $140/3 credits. SUNY Farmingdale will review high school transcripts in partnership with instructor and determine eligibility for the college tie course. This course can be used for a technology and business sequence, or math credit.

    VIRTUAL ENTERPRISES (SUNY Farmingdale) (OCC 124)

    Virtual Enterprises is a simulated business that is set up and run by students with the guidance of a teacher/facilitator and a business partner. This program allows students to experience all facets of being an employee in a firm in an actual business environment. Students are involved in every aspect of running a business, including human resources, accounting, product development, production, distribution, marketing and sales, and they engage in trade with other practice firms around the world. This simulation enables students to understand how employees, workgroup teams, and departments interact with each other and work together for the goal of the company. In addition, the simulation conveys the expectations of the workplace. Students engage in hands-on applications, problem solving, and written and verbal communication. In addition, students learn about a variety of careers associated with business, acquire 21st Century skills necessary for these careers and use technology as applied in business. Students will attend two field trips to promote their firm’s Business Plan and participate in a Trade Show. Approximate cost is $140/3 credits.
