  •          WHAT   IS   THE   OUTDOOR   CLASSROOM?

    Research shows a dramatic decline in the amount of time today’s children spend outdoors.

                         Disconnection from nature is leading to increases in problems such as

                       childhood obesity, children’s dislike and even fear of the outdoors, and increased reliance on behavior-regulating medications (Louv, 2005;

                        Rivkin, 1995; White, 2004).

    The Outdoor Classroom brings natural outdoor experiences back to childhood. These experiences include:

    -         Climbing and building with natural materials.

    -         Experiencing textures, smells, sounds, and sights of the natural world.

    -         Exploring the outdoors using observation skills and imagination.

    -         Enjoying the beauty, splendor, and wonder of plants, trees, and insects in the great outdoors.

    Creating the Outdoor Classroom is a community effort.  Through partnerships, sponsorships, and building together, we can make the Outdoor Classroom a reality.
